Watermelon Vodka Splash ❊ Not for the Kiddies

You might recall, dear readers of this blog, that l recently puréed watermelon and used it as the basis for some charming watermelon popsicles to delight the young and young at heart. Well, that’s not all I did with that watermelon purée! My second concoction is a libation definitely not for the young: Watermelon Vodka Splash.

Doesn’t that look like a long, tall drink of deliciousness?

Inspired by the always funny and always delicious blog Eggton, I introduced the watermelon to vodka, and they got along just fine. Swimmingly, in fact. Katherine, the comedic and culinary genius behind Eggton who manages never to be overshadowed by her ultra-adorable dogs Thunder and Seymour, recently wrote about a watermelon and lime cooler that suggested tequila for alcoholic kick. In a burst of creative ingenuity, I decided to substitute vodka for the tequila. Pretty original, eh? (For those of you not in the know, ‘eh’ is a common interjection in Canadian speech. As in, “Hot out today, eh? Good day for a watermelon vodka cooler, eh?” But I digress….)

I also threw in some blueberries, just to show I’m my own woman. Besides, as they say:

what grows together goes together

I’m sure there are exceptions to that rule, but watermelon and blueberries are a great seasonal duo.

Like Katherine’s recipe, mine has no measurements. Such fun! Just squint, mix and go! It’s fruity and refreshing, and definitely benefits from the addition of the light and fizzy soda. I know this because I forgot to add it at first, which explains why my photos don’t have any fizz in them. Sad but true.

Inspired by the Watermelon and Lime Cooler over at the blog Eggton — check it out!

Put a few ice cubes in a tall glass and add whatever sized shot of vodka you like/need/want. Or make this a virgin cocktail and leave out the booze altogether. Add strained watermelon purée, then top it up with a nice splash of soda, a good squeeze of fresh lime juice and stir. Top with some blueberries for colour and the fun of fishing them out from the bottom of the glass later, and a sprig of mint.

Enjoy on the back veranda on a hot summer afternoon, and let time tick on by for a while. Oh, those hazy, lazy days of summer.

  1. Y’all got some strange ways of saying things in your neck of the words.
And it should be a crime, on either side of the border, to make watermelon puree and not have a bottle of vodka handy. If only I ruled the World …

    • Not only do we talk funny, we throw the letter ‘u’ into all sorts of words just to keep things colourful, like that watermelon vodka splash (which has no u’s in it, but who cares)!

      Y’all take care, eh!

  2. Ooh, very glad that I found this. I have half a watermelon in the fridge and we’re slap bang in the middle of a heatwave in the UK at the moment! Sounds like just the job 🙂

    • There’s nothing like watermelon on a hot day (and a little vodka with it doesn’t hurt either!). For a kiddie-friendly treat, check out my Watermelon Cutie Pops! I hope your heat wave ends soon and you have lovely weather the rest of the summer!
