Smooth, With a Kick ✼ Peach Ginger Smoothie

Recently, I had a craving for a smoothie, something fruity and gently sweet. My automatic go-to for such drinks are the frozen raspberries or strawberries that are usually in the freezer. This time, though, I changed course when I saw the bag of frozen peaches I’d recently purchased —  maybe it was time I switched things up a bit instead of making the same-old same-old smoothie.

Since I was feeling a bit under the weather at the time, and since there happened to be a knob of ginger hanging around with nothing much to do, I decided to throw some of that in too. You know, to make my smoothie medicinal. I figured, hey, if I make ginger tea to fight a cold, why not use it in a smoothie?

The resulting drink was refreshing but with a gingery kick as well. It may not have cured my cold, but it sure made me feel better!

I made this smoothie using frozen peaches, which don’t seem to have a lot of flavour. When peaches are in season I’ll make it with glorious fresh peaches. The sweetness in this drink is subtle, coming solely from the peaches and some dates (no refined sugar high from this smoothie!). The ginger adds a surprising, unexpected kick (well, I was expecting it since I put it in there, but you know what I mean).

  • 1-1/2 cup peach slices, frozen
  • 1-1/4 cup milk (dairy or almond)
  • 1/2 cup ice cubes
  • 4 dates, pitted (I used Sayer dates, which are about half the size of Medjool)
  • 1/4 to 1/2 inch piece of fresh, ginger root, peeled and sliced

Combine all the ingredients in a high-speed blender and process until smooth. Makes two luscious servings.

  1. Marlene, ginger and hot water always makes me feel better when I have a cold. Your recipe looks like a much pleasanter way help ride a cold out.

  2. I should borrow a page — at least — from your book, Mar, and stock my freezer with some smoothie fixins. I do enjoy them, just never think to buy the ingredients while at the grocer’s. Regardless of whether it helped your cold, I think your addition of ginger would have gone very well with the peach flavors. This must have been one tasty smoothie. 🙂
